A Dallas family of an 18-year-old boy who died after being treated with a tainted IV
bag is furious after being handed a $12,000 bill from the hospital.
Jack A., whose family asked to withhold his last name, died in August
after suffering from cardiac arrest during a routine sinus surgery at
Baylor Scott and White's Surgicare in North Dallas.
He, along with 11 other patients, is suspected to dying from IV bags that was allegedly tainted by anesthesiologist Dr.
Raynaldo Ortiz Jr, 59.
Ortiz, who has pleaded not guilty, was caught on video reportedly placing IV bags into a warmer that had
been tainted with 'nerve-blocking drugs' between May and September 2022, according to US Attorney's Office of

The doctor has also been accused of killing his coworker
Dr. Melanie Kasper, 55, after she reportedly took home one of the tainted IV bags
to treat her dehydration and suffered cardiac arrest.

After Jack's passing his family was told the facility 'waived 100 percent
of your son's bill,' Jack's father, who was not identified, told .
Although the family anticipated still receiving
a bill, as most medical bills are automated, Jack's father
had emailed the facility five days after Jack's surgery to 'confirm that neither I nor our insurer is going to receive a bill.'
'I will be extremely displeased if I do. I recognize that sometimes billing is on autopilot,' the father wrote in an email.
But to add 'salt to the wound,' they received a bill for $12,903, which has since been taken care of by
the surgery center.
'To have this heartless financial transaction that was blind to what happened
here, it was painful, and I think irresponsible, to handle business as
usual kind of attitude,' the teen's grandfather Dr.
Dan Wohlgelernter told Fox 4.

Jack was given a 50/50 survival rate after
he suffered a cardiac emergency on August 24.
He was intubated and was transferred to a hospital and
admitted to the ICU.
A chemical analysis was run on the IV bag and it found anesthesia drugs bupivacaine and lidocaine and stimulant epinephrine.
Dr. Kasper's autopsy revealed she had died from a lethal dose
of bupivacaine, a drug that is 'rarely abused,
but is often used during the administration of anesthesia,' according to the Northern District of Texas.

"deviated from the standard of care" during an anesthesia procedure when a patient experienced a medical emergency.'

During one of Ortiz's surgeries, he reported 'refused to use' an IV
bag that a nurse had retrieved for him and has 'physically waved' it off.
It is not clear if this happened in the same incident.
In another incident, Ortiz was reportedly seen on surveillance
concealing an IV bag in a paper folder after he came out of surgery and putting the bag
into the warmer and swapping it for another.
A half-hour later, a 54-year-old woman suffered an emergency during her scheduled cosmetic surgery.
Another time, Ortiz was reportedly seen on video suspicious placing the IV bag in the warmer before
scanning the hallway and 'quickly' walking away. An hour later, a 56-year-old suffered a cardiac emergency during her cosmetic surgery.
Ortiz reportedly had a history of disciplinary actions against him,
which the doctor claimed was the center trying to 'crucify'
him.
The incident occurred at the Baylor Scott and White center (pictured) center in Dallas
US Attorney Chad E. Meacham said the office will 'vigorously prosecute this case.'
'A single incident of seemingly intentional patient harm would be disconcerting;
multiple incidents are truly disturbing,' he said.
